Auxiliary Infantry-helmet, von Gravert (Niederbieber), brass
The original of this replica is a find from the archaeological site of Niederbieber, the remains of a roman Auxiliar-fort near the raetian Limes at the Wied, a tributary of the Rhine. Helmets of this type were probably worn by both the infantry and cavalry as well during the 2nd and 3rd century AD.
This type of helmet is characterized by its comprehensive protection without significally affecting hearing and the vison field. The spacious cheek flaps cover the temporal, cheek and chin area and are entangled with each other by a pin on the front. The helmet itself is reinforced by overhead ribs, the neck is especially protected by an approx. 9 cm wide screen, as well as the forehead. Peaks at the cornerpoints of the ribs as well as the front screen probably had the purpose to deflect blows of the opponent.
Details:
- for a head circumrefence up to approx. 66 cm
- inner distance back- to forehead: approx. 23 cm
- inner distance ear to ear: approx. 18,5 cm
- Material: approx. 1,2 mm Messing
- Weight: approx. 2 kg
