Cingulum Militare, Roman Legionary Belt with Pteruges and Brass Fittings
She-Wolf with Romulus and Remus
The piece of Roman military gear known as a cingulum militare was a leather belt adorned with ornamental metal plates and often equipped with frogs (suspension mounts) for the soldier's dagger. This war belt was not only used to hold up the warrior's braccae (trousers) during battle, but was also a display of rank or military honours.
The cingulum was usually completed by a leather apron consisting of several flat strips (so-called pteryges or pteruges) hanging from the belt and decorated with continuous rows of riveted metal fittings. Each strap terminated with metal pendants (pensilia).
The richly adorned Roman cingulum or balteus we offer here is best suited for the portrayal of a late 1st century legionary. The riveted rectangular (approx. 8.5 x 5 cm) belt plates are made of thin sheet brass and embossed with alternating motifs of a human face and the famous female wolf or lupa romana nursing the twins Romulus and Remus (recorded in Roman mythology as the founders of the city of Rome). The hinged buckle and pugio frogs are also made of brass.
The belt itself is crafted from sturdy, 3 mm leather. It features punch holes and is adjustable to a wide range of sizes. A leather cord for tying and securing a dagger to the twin buttons (pugio frogs) is included in delivery. The apron is composed of 4 leather straps, each of them adorned with a brass pendant and 8 brass medallions.
An ideal accessory for Roman re-enactment. LARP, stage or TV/film, this fine Roman belt will make your transformation into a proud warrior just perfect.
