German Frog-Mouth Helm, circa 1500, 1.6 mm steel
This helmet is an authentic replica of a southern German Stechhelm (jousting helmet) from the early 16th century.
The frog-mouth helmet shape evolved from the great helm (or bucket helmet) in the early 15th century. It was worn exclusively in tournaments in combination with the Stechzeug (jousting armour).
Our helmet is composed of a domed top plate with contoured ribs, a front panel tapering in a ship’s bow-like manner and a back panel with offset, ribbed upper section. All elements are connected together by ornamental, historically accurate brass rivets. The side vents at ear level do not only facilitate hearing but also allow for easier breathing. The inside top of the helmet is padded with thick canvas. As the helm is equipped with pre-drilled holes and a rear bracket, it can be mounted onto a cuirass.
A beautiful, rare rendition of German armour smithing artistry.
Details:
- Material: approx. 1.6 mm steel, brass rivets, canvas inlay
- Suitable for head circumference up to 63 cm
- Long distance (back to front): approx. 21 cm
- Short distance (ear to ear): approx. 19 cm
- Height (incl. gorget): approx. 42 cm
- Weight (with aventail): approx. 4.7 kg
Specs may slightly vary from piece to piece.
The steel used here is not rust-proof and might show slight surface tarnishing in places. We recommend you to maintain helmets on a regular basis, for example using Ballistol Universal Oil, which is ideally suited for steel care.
