Lorica Squamata, Roman Scale Armour with Shoulder Doubling, Brass
The Roman armour referred to as lorica squamata was most prominently used (in many forms and types) during the 1st and 2nd c. AD., at the pinnacle of the Roman Empire. Although no such armour has been found so far in its entirety, many fragments and individual scales (squamae) have been recovered, and numerous surviving depictions have led experts to believe that the lorica squamata was not only worn by officers of the Imperial Roman army such as centurions, but also by legionary and auxiliary troops, cavalrymen, archers and even standard bearers and musicians.
This high-quality two-piece reproduction of a lorica squamata is hand-made and fully wearable. It is composed of overlapping, approx. 0.4 cm thick cast brass scales (with midrib) that are laced together in horizontal rows and sewn onto a sturdy, brown cotton canvas backing, forming a dense pattern reminiscent of fish scales. The sleeveless cuirass is edged in sturdy, brown leather and equipped with two leather straps and brass buckles on each side, making it adjustable to a wide range of sizes. It reaches below the hip and features a scalloped bottom edge and a round neckline with back slit opening.
The torso / back armour comes complete with an additional layer of protection for the shoulders. This fully removable shoulder doubling (also consisting of brass scales sewn onto fabric and bordered with stitched leather) is fastened with a brass clasp on the front and four adjustable leather straps and brass buckles on the back.
This impressive Roman armour is ideal for re-enactment, LARP, stage or TV/film.
