The Battle of Hastings in 1066 sealed the final defeat of the Anglo-Saxons against the Normans, who crowned hereupon William the Conqueror as their new king; a cruel genocidal maniac by modern standards who was responsible for the "harrying of the North" during the years 1069-1071 that resulted in the deaths of up to 100,000 by starvation and murder. At the same time, this historic event marks the end of the Viking Age: Through all their conquests, the Vikings ultimately settled down, and, as Christianized Normans, even fought in the crusades in the name of their new god. This sword coincides precisely with this wartime era, which was marked by significant changes. It can be qualified as a late Viking sword as well as a Norman sword.
It is solely hand-crafted. The guard and the characteristic pommel are made out of heat-treated malleable cast iron. The spring steel blade is oil-tempered up to 48-50° Rockwell and hand-riveted to the pommel. The hilt is leather-strapped. The blade has a distinctive fuller which offers both great flexibility and a lesser weight. The edges of the blade are blunt and the tip is rounded for safety. The beautiful wooden scabbard is leather-wrapped and features a wooden belt loop (max. belt width 5 cm) as well as a steel chape.
This is the practical blunt version of our Norman sword. The same sword is also available as regular version (product no. 0116696818).
