On the lookout for a high-quality, yet affordable medieval helmet that is suitable for combat re-enactment? Well, it seems your search is over! This sturdy, hand-made helmet based on a historical piece offer a great value for money. What’s more, its authentic appearance and elegant simplicity are sure to turn heads!

The barbute or barbuta, a specialised form of the celata or sallet, is derived from the earlier bascinet. This visorless helmet of Italian origin was most popular in northern Italy in the 14th and 15th c., but was also worn throughout Europe.
The barbute offered good protection for the head and face without overly restricting vision and breathing. The helmet’s rounded bowl covered the head and neck almost completely, and often featured a top ridge or low crest running from the forehead to the back of the neck. A defining characteristic of this helmet type was the forward extension of the sides towards the front, which protected the sides of the wearer’s face below the eyes. Another distinctive main feature was the T- or Y-shaped face opening. The edge of this cut-out for the eyes and mouth was usually reinforced by a riveted-on iron rim.

The battle-ready, authentic SPQR reconstruction we offer here is based on the helmet of the famous Milanese Avant armour that is on display for people to admire at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, Scotland. This late medieval armour, one of the oldest almost fully preserved suits of armour of its type in Europe, is dated to around 1440-1445. It was crafted in Milan (one of the most productive armour- and weapon-making cities of the European Middle Ages) for a member of the noble von Matsch family of Churburg Castle (Castel Coira) in South Tyrol, Italy.

Our barbute with T-shaped opening and central front-to-back ridge is handcrafted from approx. 2 mm steel. The opening and the bottom edge are reinforced, and the interior is blackened for better corrosion resistance. The riveted suspension liner made of leather ensures a snug fit and good wearing comfort, and the sturdy, adjustable chin strap with historic brass buckle provides a secure hold.

Suitable for combat re-enactment, LARP, stage or TV/film, this fine, fully wearable knightly helm is most fitting for settings of the late Middle Ages and ideal to complete the armour of a European warrior. Of course, our T-faced barbute does not only impress with its combination of authenticity, safety and comfort, but is also a true eye-catcher that will make a great, decorative addition to any helmet collector’s treasure chamber.

Prime quality at an unbeatable price – Do you wish to treat yourself to a good value piece of history that will add the finishing touch to your medieval knight's armour without blowing your budget? Then snap at the chance and order this first-class helmet today!

The steel used here is not rust-proof and might show slight surface tarnishing in places. We recommend you to maintain helmets on a regular basis, for example using Ballistol Universal Oil, which is ideally suited for steel care.
