Steel Scales for Lamellar Armour, 25 mm x 35 mm (Pack of 25)
The scale armour and the lamellar armour belong to the most ancient forms of plated armour. Both were composed of overlapping plates (lamellae) linked together in horizontal rows to form a dense mesh reminiscent of fish scales. While the scale armour was additionally laced, sewn or riveted onto a sturdy backing made of padded fabric or thick leather, the lamellar did not require any underlay.
Widespread throughout many cultures and eras, they came in a plethora of styles, shapes and patterns. The material were varied, from metals such as iron, steel and bronze, to thick, rigid leather or even horn or ivory.
When well crafted, this type of body armour was virtually impervious to cuts and thrusts and also provided particularly good protection against blunt impact weapons. Popular with Middle Eastern, Asian, Roman and Viking warriors, scale mail continued to see service well into the Middle Ages.
The set of 25 loose steel scales we offer here is the perfect accessory for ambitious re-enactors who wish to craft their own custom scale armour. The scales are not only perfectly suited for DIY projects, but also ideal as replacement or spare parts for existing armours that you wish to repair, customize, or expand.
The platelets are crafted from approx. 22 gauge steel and equipped with 5 pre-drilled holes, the larger one allowing you to tie, sew or rivet them onto a backing, and the smaller ones on the sides allowing the scales to be attached to one another for stability.
