Chainmail Coif from Tofta, Gotland, 13th Century, FRR, ID8mm, natural finish

The mail coif we offer here is a replica of a find from the late 13th century, that was discovered in 2004 in the church tower in Tofta on the Swedish island of Gotland. Considered one of the most well-preserved chainmail coifs ever found in Europe, it is believed to be connected to the War on Gotland (1288), an armed conflict between the local peasants and the townsmen of Visby. The original piece is now on display inside the Tofta church (see last picture).

Just like the Gotlandic find, our reproduction does not cover the shoulders but falls straight to mid-torso to protect the upper breast and back. It has an authentic square face opening and covers the chin.

The FRR chain maille type:
This particular mesh is a European chainmail type exclusively composed of flat rings. All rings are closed by means of round rivets with round heads. The weave is 4 in 1. This type is called FRR (= Flat ring Round Rivet heads).

This medieval coif is suitable for re-enactment, LARP, stage or TV/film, and ideal to complete the armour of a warrior or knight of the 13th or 14th century.

We recommend wearing a padded arming cap under the chain hood.

Details:
- Material: steel
- Finish: natural (slightly oiled)
- Inner ring diameter: approx. 8 mm
- Flat rings: approx. 1.6 mm wide / approx. 0.6 mm thick
- Weight: approx. 2.65 kg

Specs may slightly vary from piece to piece.

The steel used here is not rust-proof and might show slight surface tarnishing in places. We recommend you to maintain chain mail / chain armour on a regular basis, for example using Ballistol Universal Oil, which is ideally suited for steel care.
