German Sallet (Nuremberg), Medieval Helmet, 15th Century

The helmet known as the sallet superseded the bascinet in the 15th c. By the mid-century, it had become one of the most worn combat helmets throughout Europe. This helmet type existed in many shapes and variations - from plain to elaborately crafted, open-faced or visored, with a more or less pronounced tail-piece, etc. - and was especially popular in Italy (celata), Germany (Schaller), France (salade) and England.

The sallet we offer here is crafted from approx. 1.6 mm thick steel and based on German 15th c. examples, as can be seen in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg.

The bowl features a projecting neck guard and a slight ridge or crest running along its apex. It is equipped with a face guard hinged on steel rivets. When closed, the visor leaves an approx. 1.5 to 2 cm wide, 15 cm long eye-slit with an extended lower lip, which ensures sufficient vision and ventilation. The lower edge of the neck guard and visor is rolled.
The visored helmet’s interior is blackened for better corrosion resistance, and fitted with a leather suspension liner attached with rivets. The adjustable chin strap made of black* leather closes with an antiqued brass buckle (*the above pictures differ from the actual colour).

Suitable for re-enactment, LARP, stage or TV/film, this fully wearable knightly helm is most fitting for settings of the late Middle Ages and ideal to complete the armour of a European warrior. It will make your transformation into a proud knight just perfect, and is a great, decorative addition to any helmet collector’s treasure chamber.

Details:
- Material: 1.6 mm steel, leather inlay, leather chin strap with antiqued brass buckle

Specs may slightly vary from piece to piece.

The steel used here is not rust-proof and might show slight surface tarnishing in places. We recommend you to maintain helmets (and armour in general) on a regular basis, for example using Ballistol Universal Oil, which is ideally suited for steel care.
