The original on which this fitting is based dates to the 8th – 11th century and was found in the Swedish Viking settlement of Birka. The brass rivet shows the interweaving of animal and knot ornaments that is typical of the Borre style. There are three 1 cm long pins on the back that can be used to attach the fitting to a leather belt or pouch.
The belt fitting is ideal for your own DIY belt projects or as a replacement spare part. It fits perfectly with Viking Age garb and is the ideal accessory for re-enactment, LARP or fancy dress. ... superseded the Oseberg style in the course of the 9th century and prevailed until the middle of the 10th century. The early medieval Borre style, also referred to as the gripping-beast style, is named after the Norwegian locality of Borre on the Oslo Fjord. This style is characterized by representations of animals and knot patterns and was later followed by the Jelling style.
