Vestre Berg Viking Sword (Oslo) with Scabbard, Type Petersen O, 10th C.
This beautiful Viking Sword is based on an original sword that was part of the large grave find of Vestre Berg in Løiten/Løten, Norway. According to archaeological records, the grave was discovered in 1887 among some rocks during clearing works. A distinctive feature of the original, which dates back to the 10th century, is the blade, which was presumably ritually bent into an “S” shape. It is unknown whether this practice was intended to symbolically “kill” the sword before it was buried, or whether the purpose was to deter grave robbers. The sword, classified as Type O according to Petersen´s Viking sword typology, is now in the collection of the Kulturhistorisk Museum (formerly Universitetets Oldsaksamling) in Oslo, Norway.
The replica features a broad, double-edged blade with a wide fuller and unsharpened cutting edges. The hilt consists of a red leather-wrapped grip, a short, slightly curved guard and a generously sized five-lobed pommel. The bronze guard and pommel are engraved with the same patterns and motifs that adorn the original find.
The sword comes complete with a red wood-and-leather scabbard equipped with a bronze throat and chape and a sword belt with bronze fittings.
This sword is designed as a collector's or decoration/display piece and, besides its quality as a collectible, is also perfectly suited as a prop, e.g. to complete your costume.
