Comte de Nieuwerkerke Arming Sword with Scabbard, 14th C.

This beautiful arming sword was originally in the collection of Comte de Nieuwerkerke, a French sculptor and art collector. The find spot of the sword, which is now in the Wallace Collection, London, is unknown. But it is likely that it was found in France, the distinctive corrosion pattern on the blade indicating that it was a river find. It is classified as a Type XV according to Oakeshott´s typology and dated to the period between 1350 and 1400. Given this date, it is likely that the sword was used during the Hundred Years´ War between France and England.

This replica has a double-edged blade that tapers sharply towards the tip. The cutting edges are not sharpened. The hilt is composed of a curved crossguard, a wooden grip tightly bound in brown leather and a wheel pommel with a circular sunken centre.

The sword comes complete with a brown wood-and-leather scabbard.

Please note that this medieval sword is not a battle-ready weapon. It is designed as a collector´s or decoration/display piece and is not suited for combat re-enactment. Besides it´s quality as a collectible, it is also perfectly suited as a prop, e.g. to complete your costume.

The steel used here is not rust-proof and might show slight surface tarnishing in places. We recommend you to maintain the blade on a regular basis, for example using Ballistol Universal Oil, which is ideally suited for steel care.
