Product information "Duna Duna Viking Sword with Scabbard, 10th C"
Duna Duna Viking Sword with Scabbard, 10th C.
This beautiful Viking sword is a reconstruction of an original find dated to the period between 950 and 1050, and is classified as a type X according to Petersen’s typology of Viking swords.
The inscriptions on the blade are a distinctive feature of the original sword, which is now in the collection of the Musée de l’Armée in Paris, France. One side is marked with the well-known inscription of the maker ULFBERHT, a Rhineland bladesmith workshop believed to be one of the first sword “brands” (with about 170 swords dated to the 9th to 11th c., bearing the same inscription +VLFBERHT+, and found throughout Europe, even as far as western Russia). The other side bears the inscription DUNA + DUNA XX, a presumed abbreviation, which exact meaning is still unknown.
The replica offered here has a straight, double-edged blade with unsharpened cutting edges. Just like the original find, the broad fuller is engraved with the inscription VLFBERH+T on one side and DUNA + DUNA XX on the other. The hilt consists of a short steel guard with rounded ends, and a wooden grip wrapped in brown leather, that ends in a “tea-cosy” pommel made of steel.
The sword comes complete with a brown wood-and-leather scabbard featuring a steel chape and a wooden suspension loop (max. belt width 5 cm).
This medieval sword is designed as a collector’s or decoration/display piece and, besides its quality as a collectible, it is also perfectly suited as a prop, e.g. to complete your costume.
