Houndskull Bascinet, Medieval Helmet with Visor, Churburg Castle ca. 1395, 1.2 mm Steel
The houndskull (German: Hundsgugel), which enjoyed great popularity with knights and warriors throughout Europe until about 1420, was a variation of the late medieval bascinet. It owed its name to the the characteristic design of its visor which featured a projecting "muzzle" (for better face protection and ventilation) that resembled the face of a dog (hound, or in German: Hund). Pig face bascinet is another term sometimes used to refer to this particular helmet type.
The visored helmet we offer here is a replica of an original 14th century houndskull (ca. 1395 AD) that can be seen in the Armoury of the Castle of Churburg (Castel Coira) in South Tyrol, Italy.
It is made of steel and is equipped with a fully detachable face guard that is securely held in position with pegs. This visor features an approx. 15 cm long, 1 cm wide eye-slit as well as numerous round cutouts on its right side for proper ventilation. The sides and bottom edge of the helmet bowl are studded with so-called vervelles, small protruding rivets with holes that allow for the addition of chainmail aventail or camail (not included).
The blackened interior is fitted with an adjustable padded liner made of cotton fabric and attached to the bowl's edge with sturdy stitches. The 3 mm thick brown leather chin strap is adjustable and closes with a brass buckle.
This fine, fully wearable knightly helm will make your transformation into a proud knight just perfect. Of course, it will also make a great, decorative addition to any helmet collector’s treasure chamber.
