Irish Hilt Sword with Ring Pommel, incl. Scabbard, 16th Century
This single-handed sword is based upon various original finds and 16th century drawings of kerns (ceithern), the light infantrymen who made up the bulk of the Irish forces in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. These Gaelic warriors, mostly mercenaries, proved their fierceness in many conflicts across the British Isles.
One of their weapons of choice was a sword featuring a broad blade and a distinctive ring-shaped pommel that showed the end of the blade tang running through its centre. This unique open ring pommel was fairly typical of the 15th and 16th c. Irish swords. Many surviving originals of this type have been found on archaeological digs all over Ireland and are on display for people to admire at various museums, amongst others at the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin.
Our good value reconstruction of the iconic Irish-Gaelic ring hilt sword has a wide, double-edged EN45 spring steel blade that is fullered about two thirds down its length. The edges are not sharpened, and the blade's full tang is threaded to the pommel. The hilt is composed of an approx. 19 cm long crossguard with S-curved quillons, a wooden grip tightly bound in black leather and a stout ring pommel.
This fine piece of Irish history comes complete with a black, square-ended wood-and-leather scabbard with steel throat and chape.
Please note that this late medieval / Renaissance one-handed sword is not a battle ready weapon. It is designed as a collector's or decoration/display piece and is not suited for combat reenactment. Besides its quality as a collectible, it is also perfectly suited as a prop, e.g. to complete your costume, and will make your transformation into a proud Irish fighter just perfect.
